Quick answer
Quick answer
There is no single standard private paediatric OT fee in Australia. An initial assessment, ongoing session, functional report, school visit and home visit can all be priced differently. Ask the practice for a written estimate covering the service itself, reports, travel, liaison and cancellation terms.
What changes the cost
The reason for referral affects the work involved. A short consultation about one daily routine is different from a broad functional assessment involving standardised tools, school information and a detailed report.
The setting matters too. A clinic appointment may have one fee, while a school or home visit can include travel and time spent speaking with teachers or carers. Telehealth may suit some goals but should not be chosen only because of price if an in-person assessment is needed.
Request an itemised estimate
Give the practice enough information to quote the likely pathway rather than asking only for its hourly rate.
- Initial assessment length and price
- Any standardised assessment materials or scoring
- Report writing and feedback appointments
- Ongoing session rate and likely frequency
- Travel, school liaison and case conferences
- Cancellation policy and notice period
Medicare, private health and NDIS
Some people may qualify for a limited Medicare benefit through an eligible referral pathway. Private health extras may also pay a benefit, depending on the policy and provider. These arrangements commonly leave an out-of-pocket amount.
NDIS participants should ask which support item will be claimed, the rate, what counts as billable time and how travel or cancellations are handled. Check the current NDIS pricing arrangements rather than relying on an old price list.
Decide what outcome you are buying
Before agreeing to a series of sessions, ask what daily activity the plan is meant to improve and when it will be reviewed. A clear goal and review point make it easier to judge whether the time and cost remain worthwhile.
Common questions
Is the first OT appointment more expensive?
It can be longer or include assessment and scoring, so it may cost more than a routine session. Ask what is included.
Are OT reports charged separately?
Often they are, especially detailed functional reports. Request the expected writing time, fee and purpose before authorising one.
Does NDIS funding make OT free?
NDIS funding can pay for eligible supports within a participant’s plan and the applicable rules. It is still important to understand the rate, budget impact and agreement.
