Does Medicare cover speech pathology in Australia?

Medicare does not routinely pay for every private speech pathology appointment, but some eligible people can receive a benefit through specific referral pathways.

Quick answer

Quick answer

Sometimes. Medicare is not automatic for private speech pathology. An eligible person may receive a rebate through a GP chronic condition management plan or another specific MBS pathway, but eligibility, referral rules and limits apply and a gap fee may remain.

The practical answer

A Medicare card alone does not make every speech pathology appointment claimable. The service must fit an eligible Medicare Benefits Schedule pathway, the required referral must be in place, and the speech pathologist must be eligible to provide that item.

One common pathway is a GP chronic condition management plan. Speech pathologists are among the allied-health professionals who can provide services under this pathway, but the GP decides whether the patient meets the requirements.

A rebate may not cover the full fee

A Medicare benefit and a fully covered appointment are not the same thing. A private practice can set its fee, and the difference between that fee and the Medicare benefit is the gap you pay unless the practice bulk bills the service.

Ask for the full price, expected Medicare benefit and likely gap before agreeing to an assessment. Also ask whether reports, travel, school visits or longer assessments are billed separately, because these costs may not be covered in the same way as a standard consultation.

Questions for your GP and the practice

Funding rules change, so confirm the current position instead of relying on an old fee page or social-media post.

  • Am I eligible for a GP chronic condition management plan or another MBS pathway?
  • Do I need a new referral before the first speech pathology appointment?
  • How many eligible allied-health services remain in the relevant period?
  • Does this speech pathologist accept the referral and process Medicare claims?
  • What will I pay after the benefit is applied?

Other ways an appointment may be funded

Depending on the person and service, speech pathology may also be paid privately, through private health extras, the NDIS, a public service, an education service, workers compensation or another program. Each has different eligibility and documentation rules.

Common questions

Is speech pathology free with Medicare?

Not automatically. Some eligible services attract a Medicare benefit, but the practice may charge more than the benefit and leave an out-of-pocket gap.

Can a speech pathologist bulk bill?

A provider may choose to bulk bill an eligible service, but not every practice does. Ask before the appointment.

Can I claim both Medicare and private health insurance for the same service?

Generally, you cannot claim both for the same consultation. Ask your insurer and provider which claim is appropriate for that appointment.
